UK - Wood End, Beds. 4th December 2005

Posted by ricey on November 30, 2005 5:31 PM

Just hearing of this rally:-
Details provided by CSS

Wood End
Marston
Beds

Sunday 4th December 2005 9.30 - 4.00

DIG DETAILS

One of our farmers has contacted us to let us know he is happy for us to go back on his drilled fields, now the crop has taken hold. We have been to this area before, and it has proved productive with finds covering all periods.

On our last visit there was only 14 people on 120 acres, and previous to that about 35, so we have not really touched this land. One thing we are hoping will benefit us on this visit is the farmer has deep ploughed the 2 bigger fields out of the 5 arable available he usually only discs these fields, but after spreading muck after harvest he had to plough it in.

These are the 2 productive fields as well, that have produced around 50 hammered coins and about 30 Roman, including 5 denarius, there is also a couple of small pasture fields available they produced a nice pendant hanger and annular brooch on the previous visit, however we have not checked the length of these out, they may be too long, or they may have been grazed. The cropped area has growth between 2 and 4 inches, some places it is well low others are a bit higher, but still perfectly detectable.

Out and About with Ste and Col

Posted by ricey on November 29, 2005 8:27 PM

In my younger days I used to spend many a days out detecting with my twin brother Col. Some great days out we had too. We still get out now but not as often as we'd like. If we could we'd be out every week:-)

TV.jpg

It brought about an idea that I could do a cartoon about me and our Col. Thought it would brighten up the site. If you saw me and Col. you might think I've been a bit too kind with the amount of hair though:-)

For those who don't understand the cartoon 'Night Hawks' are the undesirables of our hobby who detect when it is dark, without permission. They usually detect on sites of real interest which they are likely not to ever receive permission to detect on.

I hope to add a cartoon every few weeks or more often if I'm able.

Cheers
Steve

Roman and Iron Age finds in the North West

Posted by ricey on November 27, 2005 8:21 AM

Although a lot of finds made by members of South Lancs and Cheshire Metal Detecting Club are made outside of our area, there are still some great finds to find locally. I have recently written about the success I had detecting on Sefton Park. There is also some much older material being found. You will find some items found in the North West on

Gold Edward 111 Hammered Quarter Noble

Posted by ricey on November 12, 2005 9:02 PM

Here is a photo of a Gold Hammered Coin I found whilst out on a rally. It dates from Edward 111 in the 14th Century and although is not the oldest or most expensive find to date, it gave me the most joy when I found it.

Posted by ricey on November 10, 2005 8:43 AM

I've had many emails asking were you can detect. Well as well as joining clubs and going on their rallies you can always look a bit closer to home.

Here is a small article I did in relation to Metal Detecting on Sefton Park.
