Metal Detecting Rally on Saturday 1st April to Sunday 2nd April 2006

Posted by ricey on February 20, 2006 11:09 AM |

I have been made aware of a Metal Detecting Rally at:

9.30am to 5pm and 9.30am to 4pm

The dig will be nr to Wood Walton, Cambridgeshire.

We had a rally at Wood Walton last year, although it’s the same farmer, this time round it’s a totally different farm that he owns. The amount of land at this time is unknown, as some will be undetectable due to crop growth, but the land at this particular farm totals around 6 - 7 hundred acres, and we are hoping to have 400 acres or more all being well.

From a couple of visits to this site with CS digs the site can be quiet, but some lovely finds have been found on the block of land we used, but to put this into perspective, over the 2 visits there have been a total of 70 people on about 150 acres, and half of this 150 acres will have been ploughed again by the event. In these visits the land has produced flint tools, Celtic silver, Roman silver, Saxon Sceat, and about 35 hammies, along with all the other bits and pieces, we have also found a lot of bronze age dross but no axes as yet lol.

Facilities

There will be toilets and skips on site, and we are planning a hire a marquee however the size will depend on how well tickets sell, Toddy and his family from Northern Metal Detectors will be in the marquee. Toddy carries a nice range of detecting goods as well as out door clothing, should you need anything bringing to the rally that he may not have as stock he can be contacted by logging on to http://www.northernmetaldetectors.co.uk or by calling 01324 671047

We shall also be sorting a stand pipe for fresh water on site. Rob the caterer will be on site again. You can arrive after 12 noon on the Friday, however there will be strictly no detecting until Saturday. The farmer has a pasture field for us to camp on which he has agreed to mow an area for us to get rid of some of the clumpy grass. For those that do not want to camp there is limited accommodation close by, and other accommodation within 5 miles of site, we shall post a list of sutiable places of the CS site for those interested.

Cost

The dig will be £15 per day per detectorist, children 15 and under can detect for free. All detectorists and all of their guests (non detectorists) will have to fill out registration forms, and then send them to us with payment and a SAE preferably A5 in size, after this when your payment has been processed you will receive tickets and directions to site in the post. All detectorists must be either a member of FID or NCMD and must provide their cards on the day.

How To Obtain Tickets

If you click the following link, this will take you to a web page with some other information and at the bottom of the page will be buttons to click on to print off the registration forms to send to us.
