The Burton Hoard - Conclusion

Posted by ricey on February 6, 2006 11:58 PM |

Well it wouldn't be fair to publish the 3 articles relating to the Burton Hoard without giving a conclusion as to the reward received by the 3 members of the South Lancs and Cheshire MDC. Here it is below courtesy of www.treasurehunting.tv

The Burton Hoard is considered to have been the property of elite
aristocrats and suggests that the original owners were wealthy,
probably Welsh or Irish. The three men that found the hoard with
metal detectors acted responsibly and reported the find immediately.
As a result, the three men and the landowner were rewarded very
handsomely for their efforts and honesty, and the museum that
purchased the hoard has a unique collection, the likes of which have
never been on display in the past. The Burton Hoard will make it's
home at the museum in Cardiff, who purchased the collection for
£85,000 with money from grants from the National Arts Collections
Fund, the Heritage
Lottery Fund, and The Goldsmith's Company.Half of the £85,000 paid for
the Burton collection will go to the landowner where the treasure was
buried.

The remaining half will be divided between the three men who discovered it.
The museum has been able to buy the Burton hoard with the help of a
£21,000 grant from the National Art Collections Fund, another £35,000
from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and a grant from The Goldsmiths'
Company.

The Burton Hoard would likely have remained hidden without the efforts
and enthusiasm of the three metal detector users who uncovered the
treasure purely by accident. The use of metal detectors has been the
major factor in the discovery of many ancient and extremely valuable artifacts.
