Rare Saxon belt goes on display
Posted by ricey on September 15, 2006 12:14 PM
A rare Anglo-Saxon belt buckle found by a treasure hunter with a metal detector is going on public display for the first time.
The copper alloy buckle dates from between AD600 and AD720 and is only the second one of its type found in England.
It was unearthed recently on the outskirts of London by Bill Robson, who handed it to the Museum of London.

King Alfred Rally - Rally Report
Posted by ricey on September 3, 2006 12:31 PM
I'm hearing unconfirmed reports that there was upwards of 700 people at the King Alfred Rally with lots of land to detect on.
People turned up from all parts of the country, not to mention the varying groups of Dutch guys who came over especially.
Complaints have been raised about the amount of bullets (running into thousands) which were being pulled out of the ground, with no mention in the advertising previously. Fields did produce normal hammereds, roman and brooches but appears to be just average finds - nothing spectacular. However as we all know in the Metal Detecting game - a site in a promising location does not always produce.

Latest news from the Firle Rally I can report that there are loads of finds being made at Firle. Already there have been well over a dozen hammered coins, several Roman and Saxon brooches so much so that the finds case with the FLO is over-flowing.
Weather: It rained a little at the start on Saturday, went off for the first few hours.
Will keep you updated.

Last week there was a feature on the bbc after the news about a man who bought a field hoping to find a Medievil Village on it !
The name of the village was Trellech in Wales. In 1296 it was thriving - 200 years later with the onset of Plague, War and Crop Failure it had gone.
Ifg you are interested in reading his story why not look here
http://www.bbc.co.uk/theoneshow/features/feature/08_dan_snow_trellech.shtml
So I guess the moral of the story to us detectorists is 'if you can't get permission from a farmer to detect on his field - you could always buy own!!!
