A farmer's field may once have been a royal site where tribal kings met and made sacrifices to their gods.


Studies of a huge coin hoard found near Market Harborough suggest it was an important religious centre in the first century AD.

Finds include a Roman helmet that may have been given to a king by the emperor Claudius, who invaded England in 43AD.

The wealth of information emerging from the hoard of 5,000 silver and gold coins, discovered by metal detector enthusiast Ken Wallace three years ago, has amazed archaeologists, who are trying to raise £900,000 to buy it for the nation.

The artifacts are being conserved by a team from the British Museum and the University of Leicester.
